About

Charlie Hughes is Pegasus Professor of Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. He is also a Professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Education, Games and Interactive Media, and the School of Modeling Simulation & Training. He is co-director of the university’s Synthetic Reality Laboratory (SREAL), co-director of the Center for Research in Education Simulation Technology (CREST), and co-lead of the Learning Sciences Faculty Cluster Initiative. He started his journey in computer science as a programmer in the aerospace industry in 1962. He received his BA in Mathematics in 1966 (Northeastern University), his MS in Computer Science in 1968 (Penn State), and his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1970 (Penn State). He was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate in 1971-72 and a faculty member at Penn State and the University of Tennessee before coming to UCF in 1980. His research interests are in virtual environments, especially those focused on learning, and the applications of these technologies to interpersonal skills development, teacher preparation, physician training, de-escalation skills, and protective strategies for self and others. He has been PI or co-PI on over $20M in research funding, authored or co-authored over 200 research papers, and advised 26 students to completion of their Ph.D.’s in computer science and modeling & simulation. He is a Life Senior Member of both the IEEE and the ACM.
